Captain Insane-O For a Day

Yeah... was pretty frazzled today... started off early and now it's ending early. After running to the grocery store, I threw together a really good breakfast bagel with pesto. Then I continued through my day with various silly tasks. After meeting with Brett, I discovered I'd have to teach his class at 4:30p (not 2:30p) and in Eppler North (not Eppler South.) Oops.

I feel pretty satisfied with the stuff I accomplished today. Now I'm going to kick back and catch up on some emailing. Anyway, I wanted to quickly include a couple of interesting "finds" that I so randomly referred my BFF to (and was informed that I should include them in my blog):

OMG home-girl done broke her badonk ass... better than a fat white chick spiral-fracturing her leg in a wet garage... big people falling down is hilarious right?!?!? Is that why this is funny? I'm just trying to figure this out. Here is the woman's personal reaction to her original vid post:

I'm just hoping someone out there can explain the humor to me... because I'm not smart... then we can become "really good friends joined by self-pity, bitterness, and vomit." Ok, sorry. Just being really sarcastic.... which leads me to my next article installment:

TCB in the OH

Well, it's back to the grind down here. Summer is over...

As I watch the 1p game, I figure I can push out a quick b-log. I decided to drive back to BG yesterday afternoon (which turned out to be very beneficial in order to miss the brunt of the southbound traffic and rain.) After chilling w/ Grem last night and FINALLY getting a good night's sleep (my bed + favorite sheets - worrying about KWKE = perfect snooze), I got up this morning feeling a lot better. Sundays are always amazing!

I've already knocked out several of the tasks I wanted to take care of before this busy week and everyone getting here Friday:

Grocery shopping for special house-guest food
Returning the "hooker shoes" I didn't wear to the funeral
Exchanging my wireless mouse
Washing/vacuuming the Taurus
Giving an old lady a quarter for the vacuum because she was short 25 cents
Making rice crispy treats and lemon-poppy seed bread
Finished cleaning/ridding the furniture upholstry of cat leavings (BOOYA!)
Opening windows and airing out the apartment with the fall breeze
Setting up my new digital frame from Sally
Unpacking/laundry
Recycling

...and about to eat some lunch. I feel great. Hopefully I'll have a more interesting entry tomorrow. Today's the Lord's Day... going to relax and enjoy it now =)

It's BLT Month Up In This Piece!

A few interesting finds of the day:

Makin' Bacon: Foodies Are Going Hog Wild Over Pig

An Insomniac's Ramblings

You never really know how you've been impacted by a person until you begin to see them in a different light. He is so important to me (even though everything has been shitty for a while.) I was just thinking about this again... as I sit here awake... again.

As overwhelmingly difficult as these past couple of days have been for me, I'll never know how hard this was for him... and he still has so much to endure as he tries to muddle through the next few weeks. I hope the worst of it is over, but knowing that he has dealt and is dealing with the loss for the most part on his own has me worried and sad. I don't know what to do and I can only try so hard.

God this sucks... guess I'll just sit here and think about it for a while longer =(

Hump Day Slump Chump

I just realized something last night. My most FAVORITE third-baseman of all time has gone to the dark side. After Monday night's game, I thought it couldn't be true. I was hoping it was a hoax or something. But I was wrong... my spry little cutie, one of the Tigers' only All-Star players this year, the longest standing teammate, father, and philanthropist Brandon Inge did something I could have never foreseen: he got two ridiculously enormous tattoos!

If you remember earlier in the year Brandon Inge let a young boy (a hospital patient he was visiting) autograph his forearm and promised to hit him a home run; he obliged and hit a home run for the kid. Unfortunately though Inge is currently hitting .164 with 3 HR and 9 RBIs since the All-Star break. For as big of a slump Inge has been in, I completely understand why he might want to go above and beyond the measely autograph that brought him good luck before... but this is some drastic ink to get done in less than 30 hrs! Holy poop!

After conducting a bit of research I found out that they are his son's names-- Tyler and Chase. Ok, great. But don't have anymore kids buddy. You'll look even more ridiculous with huge tats of other, future kid's names on your legs... or other places... ewww. Don't get me wrong though, tattoos on some people are downright sexy. But not my Ingey. He usually operates on such a higher, non-conformist level. I mean, for Christ's sake, he enters the field to Hurricane Chris' "Halle Barry (She's Fine)"...

I definitely considered him a baller up until now... but everybody gets a cliche tattoo of their kid's name. Unfortunately now I kind of see him as a sell-out chump. God he used to be so hot! Bummer.

Anyway, there's my silly little observation of the day. I hope to discuss this with a few other fans tonight/tomorrow when I get back home. I'm getting pretty anxious about everything =(

Long Weekend, Even Longer Week

Well, I missed a couple of days writing for the ol' b-log due to a few unforeseen issues yesterday. I anticipate this happening every once in a while over the semester. Anyway, the weekend was CRZNAZY! So much good food! I totally over-did it, but I thought I'd take a few random pictures along the way:

Katje and I messing around after devouring a whole Jet's BBQ chicken pizza (P.S. Kevin- we love screwing with you late at night on FB IM... you're such a dork!)

Eliy's yummy, cheesy breakfast dog before it wound up in the dirt.

At Sarah's benefit softball tournament on Sat. morning w/ Joy and Chi.

Mango Dole Whip from Doozie's! (Obviously dipped in chocolate... that's how I roll.)

On the way home from Dad's on Sunday (after having a huge dinner (grilled chicken, potato salad, fresh corn, homegrown tomatoes, Grandma bread, and ice cream)) we wondered if the popcorn wagon was open... it was! I can never resist their fresh, still-warm caramel corn. Katje can't resist any kind of cotton candy either.

Then, once arriving to Paula-Land I discovered a delicious pie made from blackberries picked out at Mom and Roger's "secret" state land. Obviously I decided one more morsel wouldn't hurt me...

... until later in the evening when we succumbed to Freddie's burgers while watching the end of the game.

How I missed it. Needless to say, I definitely put the hurt on... and maybe a couple of pounds. But it's always worth it, because these are the types of thing that I truly enjoy (even though I don't allow myself to do that very often.) And when thinking back to Sunday afternoon, sitting in the backyard at home in Adirondak chairs, listening to Roy Blount Jr on A Prarie Home Companion comment about the art of a Southern supper, Dad said, "Listen to this. It'll remind you of how we eat." So of course I asked, "Um, Dad, how do we eat?" To which he laughingly replied: "Like pigs!"

Here is the podcast in case you're interested:

So yeah, still not sure about the results of Weigh Day 2009... but I did enjoy the realization that it's been over two years since breaking my leg! I feel really great now that I've continued to maintain and thrive =)

In other news: just waiting for Thursday to get here. Thinking about KWKE and hoping he's getting through this ok. Although I have to be down in BG for all of these initial first week tasks, I feel detached from what I'm supposed to be doing. Wish I could be there with him now.

Last Day of GTA Training, On the Road Again

Courtesy of the horse pill-sized pain killer (Ibuprofen 600) I took before bed last night, I actually had a relatively good sleep without any headache. Thank eight pound, six ounce baby Jesus! I know today is going to be really overwhelming!

I was also able to take in a few old eps of Family Guy (brief vid comment to follow), caught the rerun of the season opener for Top Chef (love, love, love... really excited!), and finished off my TV watching with the new ep of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. God those bitches are crazy! Somehow though all of this mind-numbing drivel is considered entertainment, and you'd think that me (being the true cynic that I am) would see through that. Wrongo dongo. These are actually some of my top ranked shows. I usually can't wait until my night classes get out so that I can rush home and watch them after the game is off.

Anyway, to save on valuable blog-authoring energy (like I said, I have a long day ahead of me), I thought that I'd include a few of the video clips that correspond with last night's shows so that I might entice some of you to also love the shows as much as I do. Obviously you don't get a choice. The only option is to love them hahahaha

Family Guy "Fat Guy Strangler" 2005, Season 4, Episode 17

Ok, it's ironic that I caught this last night, because this is the exact ep that I plan to tie in with my dissertation. Look at it through the lens of Obesity Paradoxes: Effects of the Mainstream Media’s Influence on Weight Obsession and you'll begin to see why it's relevant. But yeah, I could go on and on about this, but then I wouldn't allow for any mystery when publishing my diss would I?!

The last two vids are included only to entice you to watch:

Top Chef Season 6

The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 2

Ok folks, that's it for today. Gotta split. I'm on the road again around 5p (or earlier, cross my fingers) heading for the great Northern County of Clare... and I have Jet's on speed dial =)

Office Shmoffice

Ok, so I went downstairs in our building for the first time yesterday afternoon and unlocked this monstrosity. Was pretty smelly too. Oh well... hope to spruce it up this week. Yesterday was a pretty long day, my head was swimming with things I have to get done, the Tigs lost, I was bombarded with several more unforeseen tasks for today, didn't get an old-lady nap, discovered some dumb photos I didn't want to see on FB, found out Sarah won't be coming down for my b-day/Labor Day weekend, and I demolished a huge mango chicken salad from Qdoba minus the sour cream (which wouldn't normally phase me... until I discovered that it's like 780 cals.) No wonder I woke up at 4am feeling like poo.

All of that aside, I just realized the complaining won't change any of this... so my plan is to pace myself today, do my workout later (waiting for UPS again), and prayerfully remind myself that worry and disappointment aren't worth my time. Also dreaming about the Dole Whip (see below) I'm going to eat this weekend (along with some Jet's hahahahaha.) Crossing my fingers that Doozie's is still open and the line isn't atrocious when I decide to stop in.

Obviously all I think about is food... and ready for tomorrow to commence so I can get the hell out of here.

Ciao!

I'M STAAAAAAAARVING!

As in one of my favorite Chris Farley lines:

So I just carb loaded on home-made bruschetta... because it will hopefully carry me through today's meetings until dinner (now that it's way to late to eat breakfast.) I also added some fresh mozzarella to round it out a bit. It got me pumped for this weekend when I hope to wrap my lips around some Jet's Pizza! It's been far too long!

I'm getting really anxious to exit out of BG for a while, and "Weigh Day 2009" (as in Saturday) is fast approaching. Can't wait to see where I'm at. Regardless of the results, I'm just really looking forward to seeing my favorite peeps and helping Katje finalize her move. I think some gin will probably also be involved. Let's hope I stay pretty disciplined considering next week is going to be crazy! I don't need to lose to much structure the weekend before my classes officially start.

Anyway, blah. Off to be more productive. Lots to read and process already. Oh, and here's a quick vid that I'm willing to identify with in terms of the thought I included about Jet's earlier:

Breakfast of Champions

ME RRRRIKEY!

Paper Heart opened...

...over the weekend at select theatres, opened my brain, and opened my wallet (I'm a jack-ass who is willing to pay more to park than for the actual film.) Reality and fiction share the screen in Paper Heart, a fictional tale of fledgling romance wrapped inside a documentary about whether or not love exists. 23-year-old comedian Charlyne Yi (who also stars in the film) introduces viewers to biologists, bikers, a romance novelist, a couple married for 50 years and others who talk about love and how to recognize it. Yi interviews people across the country, then plays a fictional character based on herself who falls in love with a guy named Michael (Michael Cera playing a version of himself).

Even thought I was by myself, I was totally taken by it. I enjoyed the fact that Yi utilized her child-like, humorous approach to get to the bottom of the "does love exist?" conundrum... and of course it made me feel good thinking about certain people that I've always been at a loss in considering my love for (or lack thereof.) So if you're a disgruntled old spinster like myself, you should definitely catch the flick... you'll probably have to wait for it to come out on DVD. Sometimes the simplest of notions can be the most profound.

And, as Rev. Run will tell you, GOD IS LOVE.

Just Another Manic Monday

Yes, I just quoted The Bangles. Shut up. It's always pretty overwhelming coming back to the grind after an awesome summer... fortunately I plan to extend my gratuitous fun-having through September. We had a great initial meeting today, although WH 121 felt like we were burning a slow death in hell. What morons turned off the A/C in there?! Fess up morons!

Anyway, the group seemed to enjoy the nonverbal activity that I forced them to do in the spirit of "building community." It was great to meet everyone and hear about their backgrounds a little bit. The only unfortunate part of the day is that I didn't provide enough time for my workout. Can't make that a habit now can I? Will get myself to the gym in the a.m.

In other food-related news, I have yet another disappointment: I ate like crap today. I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel here. Hopefully my options for well-rounded nutrition will be augmented tomorrow with the short term loan I took out today. So as you can imagine, I don't have a photo of anything that I ate today. It's pretty "top secret" considering it wasn't very good for me... but I do have an interesting little morsel to add that I thought might interest you:

Ponderosa pines smell like dessert. Yes, isn't that a random addition to today's blog entry? Stick your nose into a crevice of the bark and take a big whiff. It may smell like butterscotch or vanilla. The next person who smells it might insist it's more like cinnamon, or even coconut. Scientists don't know why a closely sniffed Ponderosa smells like baking cookies. The aroma may arise from a chemical in the sap being warmed by the sun. Regardless, this is extremely interesting and makes me angry that I can't wander around smelling trees in order to quell my appetite for baked goods. This also reminds me of a certain person (call her my third sister) who insisted that the cut poplar wood we harvested as children also wreaked like another delicious food: ketchup. Ok, but enough about that. I'm actually just testing to see if my bfff has actually read this or not. I'm assuming it will be addressed during our customary morning telephone discussion if so.

Well, off to finish my nightly tasks. I hope the rain continues to cool it down some. Ciao!

Stirring the Kool-Aid... um, fruit juice

The Washington Post commented on this advertisement Tuesday. Click here for the link.

One of the campaign's organizers posited: "The direct comparison is: You have affluent children with access to healthy foods, and disadvantaged children have the same rights to the same kinds of healthy meals as affluent kids. And we are fighting for that fairness, so we felt that making that statement as directly as we could was important." Good point.

I find it interesting that, even with the rise of the whole food/organic/buy local movement and various other factors in what Americans prefer on their plates, we still cannot provide children with balanced meals at school. Kids are socially programmed to eat what others around them are eating. If a parent frequents a fast food chain, the child is likely to also partake in those types of eating habits. If schools only offer specific "choices" (e.g. NO CHOICE) then most kids are more adept to become addicted to salt, sugar, fat, and certain colors. In the long run this obviously can lead to other preferences in taste and the changes of body size/shape.

Rachael and I were discussing this over our extremely delicious dinner last night (carpaccio, caprese salad, calamari, and good bread.) I began to wonder why we as a society seemingly enjoy burgers and pizza over meals with other complex flavors such as the one in which we were partaking. The cost really isn't that much different. Why are there not more supermarkets and/or restaurants that offer a line-up of fresher options? Do we prevent our kids' conceptualization of "healthy meal choices" because we have influenced them to indulge in only the most processed and calorie-laden items such as candy, chips, and pop simply because that was what we thought we preferred as children? Granted: the selections we made at dinner were not necessarily the best in terms of calories, but in considering portion, price, and variety it can be assumed that these types of meals could be available to a larger number of people and on a much grander scale.

It angers me that Kool-Aid is widely marketed to the masses because it's cheap and full of sugar. We created it in a lab and it's readily produced in a factory. Why is it offered in school settings more so than 100% fruit juice? Because in general, school systems don't actually care to reformulate menus or strive to provide balanced meals. It's all about the bottom line: what we think kids like better and what we think is more cost effective... which simply isn't the case (it's just a dim-witted justification for a much larger problem.) We do not provide the best food options or guidance regarding nutrition and sustainability up front, therefore children don't know any better!

As an adult I've become so much more aware of where my food comes from, what it costs, and how it was prepared. I believe that this is also imperative for new generations and I am in full agreement with advertisements similar to the aforementioned campaign concerning children's nutrition because it illuminates a topic which effects everyone everyday... even if it jars us into rethinking how the President's children are addressed within the media. Simply put: we need a collective change of perspective regarding taste, enjoyment, value, availability, and affordability of food in general. Our ability to survive is hinged upon our likelihood to eat well.

Ok, on the road again soon... had a lovely time in the windy city as usual.

Stir Crazy and pure crazy

Dinner last night at Stir Crazy was really yummy! It was a very large portion but we were all extremely hungry and tired after our day of individually navigating traffic (calorie counting was not on my agenda at this point.) Once we regained a little energy, we started discussing the artful ways in which someone might "job" her/himself... although they were hilarious, I will not be including the details here... far too off-color. Anyway, I had a huge bowl of Thai bbq noodles (Shanghai noodles, tomatoes, onions, carrots, red peppers, snow peas and cilantro tossed in Thai bbq sauce) that completely did away with my hunger pangs; it also resulted in an appropriate exchange of fortune cookies at the end of the meal (considering he had just bought a new pair of shoes it was quite ironic that Drew received the fortune that indicated he would soon own said pair of shoes. Crazy.) Good way to end the day... which was followed with falling asleep on a couch while trying to act as if The Soloist was a decent movie.

As a side-note, I'll offer my thoughts about Paper Heart soon (it was only showing in select theatres, therefore I was able to drive up to Lincoln Park and watch it while I'm here) but I'm not into writing about that right now. On the other hand, what I did just come across on my customary morning search of CNN was this news story:

Event on Abu Ghraib soldier canceled over threats
By BRETT ZONGKER (AP)

WASHINGTON — A lecture by the woman who became the public face of the Abu Ghraib scandal was canceled Friday at the Library of Congress after threats led to concerns about staff safety.

Former Army reservist Lynndie England had been scheduled to discuss her biography as part of a veterans forum on Capitol Hill. The book by author Gary S. Winkler is called "Tortured: Lynndie England, Abu Ghraib and the Photographs That Shocked the World."

Members of the Library of Congress Professional Association, the employee group holding the talk, received an e-mail from president Angela Kinney saying the event was canceled due to staff safety concerns. A spokeswoman for the library said Kinney would not comment further.

The group had received "numerous expressions of protest" about the lecture from its members, the e-mail said.

David Moore, a Vietnam War veteran and German acquisitions specialist at the library who organized the event, said he received several e-mails threatening violence and shared them with police and the library's inspector general.

He said he was disappointed by the cancellation but supports the decision because of safety concerns. "We can't have an event here that's going to develop into a brawl like a town hall meeting," he said.

He added, "Free speech in America is pretty well dead."

He blamed an essay decrying the event on the Small Wars Journal blog for stirring up much of the opposition. The site focuses on war politics and strategy.

"It's a disgrace that the dishonorable profit and that we use government property and resources to glorify the gutless. If you attend the lecture on Friday, don't save me a seat," reads the posting by Morris Davis, another Library of Congress employee.

Davis, who retired from the Air Force after serving as chief prosecutor for military trials at Guantanamo Bay, resigned from his Army legal post in protest because he believed waterboarding was torture.

Davis said he was grateful the event was canceled and had heard from many library employees who disagreed with inviting England to speak. Those who disagreed planned to skip the event in protest, but no one advocated violence, he said.

"I believe a person who has paid her debt to society has the right to move on with her life, and that applies to Ms. England," Davis said in an e-mail Friday. "I hope she finds a job and can support her child. But to be invited to speak at the library that belongs to the Congress of the United States is an honor, and I just don't believe in honoring the dishonorable."

Davis said he was bothered by England because he said she portrays herself as a victim, while other soldiers who lost arms and legs at war don't get book deals and don't complain.

Other efforts to promote the book on England have been disrupted, its author said in an e-mail, though he didn't elaborate. Winkler defended the biography as balanced, saying it includes voices besides England's to tell the full story of the events and people involved at Abu Ghraib.

Moore has organized the library group's veterans forums for eight years, and he said the talks generally draw 40 to 80 people and some have been carried on C-SPAN.

Moore said he won't plan future lectures because of the England problems and that he's canceling three already scheduled, including those with a woman who wrote about sexual harassment in the military and anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, whose son Casey was killed in Iraq.

As a counterpoint to England's talk, Moore had also planned a later event with the prosecutor who handled England's case and who has a book due out next year.

"I'm just fed up," Moore said.

England, now 26, has said she hopes the book will improve her image and help people understand that her role in the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib in 2004 was limited. She is now raising a young son near her family in West Virginia. A spokeswoman said England may comment on the cancellation later Friday.

She is currently appealing her convictions for conspiracy, mistreating detainees and committing an indecent act after serving half of a three-year sentence. England was one of 11 soldiers found guilty of wrongdoing at Abu Ghraib.

I have a few comments about this (of course.) Free speech is not dead. As proof, I will remind you that I am publishing my own thoughts as I type this... the question is: Does it matter? Will I profit or benefit from this in any way? Certainly the answers are "no" and "no." Now ask these questions of Lynndie England... and throw in the fact that she is a war criminal. Pure craziness.

"I broke up with cheese"

This was Nia Vardalos' (from My Big Fat Greek Wedding) witty response to the media on how she lost 40lbs earlier this summer. She told People magazine: "I always say cheese keeps calling me and trying to get me to meet at a cheap motel but I'm really committed to just staying single for awhile."

Well, that's cute, but I just can't do it. To keep with the funny analogy, I almost always put out for cheese... even though I've been trying to distance myself from his advances for quite some time now.

Along with some really good salsa verde, here's the sucky mess of nachos I procured yesterday with baked tortilla chips and the fat free shredded cheddar cheese I've been trying to choke down in the spirit of trying to replace some of the stuff in my repertoire of loved but calorie-laden foods with "healthier" alternatives (it looks and tastes like melted plastic):

Well, I guess it's back to the drawing board... or cheese board (get it?)
Off to Chicago! Ciao!

"Bizarre Foods" goes Clare County-style

Yes, you heard me correctly. When Andrew Zimmern recently visited Appalachia on Bizzare Foods I was completely floored when I watched this segment of the show:

Not only were they preparing squirrel (there's a long-standing joke concerning my family and the hunting of these redneck rodents) but they were also frying them in BACON GREASE! I laughed my ass off as the chef mentioned how, when he was growing up his family kept a jar of it on the stove at all times; readily available for any eggs that needed fryin' or gravy that needed thinnin' out. I think that guy must have been one of my long lost kinfolk.

Enjoy... and think of me =)

Youkilis is a Giant Pea-Brained Idiot

Ok, here's my brief comments about the game last night. Any moron can realize that Porcello is a little guy that doesn't want his beautiful face to be injured. He's a goregeous star pitch that had a three run lead and no reason to throw at Youkilis. He on the other hand came off as a total Cromagnon oaf by charging the mound. Here's a tip Youk: why don't you learn how to hold a bat and then maybe your entire upper body wouldn't hang over the plate?!

Here's the vid:

And the best columnist opinion that I've read thus far can be found here.

Of course the entire episode was unsportsmanlike and ridiculous, but they should have continued with Porcello. The Red Sox didn't deserve to win considering his ejection and how the game was moving along.

UPS driver where are you?

Waiting for she/he to deliver my new amazing laptop bag that I ordered from this site (highly recommended.) Hopefully it will be efficient, lightweight, easy to carry, somewhat trendy, and similar to the gorgeous gray Italian leather Cristina bag my bfff gave me for Christmas last year. Should work out like everything else has lately.

That's what I love about my life right now... yes, there's quite a bit of thought/effort invested in the planning of stuff, but when it feels as if I'm not struggling everyday I'm very pleased. These first few weeks of school should be sort of stressful but also totally fun. Can't wait to work with the returning GTAs and welcoming new faces. This makes me feel good!

Happily, life is not going to be as complicated this fall semester. Three courses with three faculty members that I'm looking forward to attending (along with my ABCD responsibilities/office hrs), and then knee surgery/hardware removal on December 21st. I hope to position myself for the preliminary exams soon and plan for the massive undertaking we all lovingly refer to as the dissertation proposal (cue the scary music.) Nevertheless, I'm going to enjoy myself these next few months and take a relatively lackadaisical approach to my life. "Auto-pilot" is sometimes necessary, and enjoyment is imperative.

Also, I'm still feeling extremely invested in my workouts. Even though the daily 40 mins seemed like it would be way to hard to accomplish during the school year, I'm positive after the meeting yesterday that I'll be able to stick with my cycling regimen. Really stoked! Ok, enough babble. Here was the lunch that I just annhilated after viewing the really horrible car accident that was out in front of my scary intersection. That place is a death trap... hoping the driver was ok considering they were taking him away on a stretcher =(

Grilled ham/Havarti, Michigan sweet cherries (my fave!), tomato juice

Oh Hell to the Naw!

Mondays are always fun days... well not really, but I'll make the best of it. Today is the first of a series of meetings for the GradStep program and my new position as Asst. Basic Course Director for the introductory speech class here. Getting excited for the semester and meeting all the new grad students/instructors. The next few days will be followed up with class prep, lesson plans, blah blah blah and then off to Chi-town for the Mraz show on Thursday! Really looking forward to the 5 hr car ride alone (as if!)

Anyway, one last hurrah before the next few weeks of busy work and finagling... then HOME!

Also, in staying true to form, I've included a little clip that I stumbled upon last night:

Thoughts? Reactions? Making fun of the programming on TV or making fun of obesity in general?

Blueberries and Bacon

For lunchie: diet root beer, Michigan blueberries, BLT, multivitamin

Of course I haven't had any pop for a long time now, but I have a secret penchant for diet A & W so I bought some yesterday. The blueberries were the best that I've seen all summer and SO good... 86ed the last of the bacon though... contemplating whether or not I should lay off for a week or so. Thought I would look up the nutrition facts just to keep things in perspective and this is what I found:

Nutrition FactsServing Size: 2 slices / 1 entree
Amount per Serving
Calories 104
Calories from Fat 80
I had four slices so that would be 208 calories+
2 slices light potato bread 70 calories+
tbsp. Miracle Whip 35 calories+
tbsp. light margarine 50 calories+
tomatoes/lettuce nominal= 363 calories
(w/ the berries it's only a little over 400 cals for the whole lunch! Sweet! CAN eat bacon!)
At least I'm not addicted to this shit too... wait for it:

Linner

You know, the cross between lunch and dinner.

Ate all this yummy stuff after watching Julie & Julia this afternoon because I wanted to feel like I was endulging (but without the bacon fat or butter.) I'm a huge lover of spicy tuna sushi and seaweed salad... could eat this everyday! The apple chips are not the healthiest choice, but I wanted a little bit of extra fiber.

Was really hungry, and being that it's so late in the day I decided to finish it up with a few golden raspberries and low-fat cream. Definitely had a good day with a few splurges... even found a pair of gray pin-striped pants for school (which is really kick-ass considering I can never find anything long enough!)

Also dug the film even though I was accompanied by a theatre full of elderly women. Hmmmm crazy. Anyway, Meryl Streep** was amazing! Stanley Tucci was not so bad either. I also enjoyed reminiscing the day when a tall woman could sit next to her somewhat smaller-statured man and completely succumb to a rich meal, a full-flavored cigarette, and a stiff gin and tonic in public (all of which Julia Child would definitely partake in back in the day.) When I'm back to a position of weight maintenance I'll be following her lead again once in a while =)

The movie was an accurate depiction of the love and devotion that so many cooks are able to experience with the meals they prepare at home for the people they adore. This simple notion has the potential to change the world and touch everyone's lives... and I'm all about that. I know my big sister will appreciate it too.

** Most hilarious line (when extracting manicotti shells out of hot, boiling water bare-handed): "These damn things are hot as a stiff cock!"

Shameful Hussy I Am

Yep. It's unfortunate the lengths (no pun intended) a bald spinster would go to... I broke down and bought this recently:

Vanity and superficiality be damned; I wanted volume. Unfortunately I look even more thin-haired with this jank inserted under my part. Serves me right I guess for believing that a $10 piece of plastic will work miracles... maybe it will suffice more efficiently as an impromptu ass-scratcher?

Man, just think how many scrunchies $10 would've bought me! (Dude, I'm kidding... I said I'm turning into a spinster... not an 80s lady.)

Kills me every time...

I'm positive all of the Tigs fans out there are familiar with the reoccurring commercials during the FSN-Detroit broadcast, but this is the clincher:

Bits of Tid

Productive day here in the O.H. Biked 8 miles in 40 mins. Snagged an awesome black Ann Taylor shift dress. Watched a very endearing film this afternoon:

Dug the soundrack and of course I couldn't resist Zooey Deschanel's performance**. She offers a lot of character in all of her roles. The most poignant aspect of the plot was that there is a lesson in all of the "love" stories that are produced and distributed. I appreciated that the message emphasized the coincidental ways in which individuals become entwined. Maybe I should think about this more in terms of future relationships... Do we simply identify a romantic partner as being our true "love" when the time seems to be right? I think we all enjoy the fantasy of believing it is more than just happenstance.

But who knows. Nevertheless, now I can scratch 500 Days of Summer off of my list of movies to watch... I think I'm going to watch Julie & Julia tomorrow and eat some good foodies after =) Can't work out because the Rec is closed...

Asta!

** Also loved her in Winter Passing w/ Mr. Ferrell (best scene):

Perhaps we'll remember this?

Listen to the whole thing and tell me you're not enthralled!
Perhaps this brings back some memories?
Perhaps this will get stuck in our heads?

JUST when I decided to start blogging again...

In the midst of the most recent news concerning the gym killer George Sodini, I've stumbled upon several other blogs (including his own http://georgesodini.com/20090804.htm) that point to various theories concerning why he set out to open fire on innocent women in an LA Fitness outside of Pittsburgh Tuesday.

There is quite a bit going on with this case, but as usual the mainstream media sources seem to only be scratching the surface of the true intentions and underlying reasons as to why Sodini followed through with his "plan." Here are the vids he posted on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5tgVx5E5x8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1ZQHrKQo5Q

Brief synopsis: Sodini needed help. So why didn't he get it? Why didn't he take the personal initiative? Do we plan to write this off as another depressed, sexually-repressed, emotionally illogical person who was alone, therefore his only option was to kill a bunch of women in order to garner attention? When do we dig deeper into these types of sociological issues? Because, really, not only are these conclusions unoriginal, they are also obstructive to the far more important ideals of humanity. I found Laurie Toby Edison's (photographer and feminist) arguments to be extremely succinct on this topic: http://laurietobyedison.com/discuss/?p=1555

Anyway, it's incredibly ironic that I've been working through these ideas for the past few days... now that the blogosphere has opened up for me once again. Are blogs a cry for help for a lot of people? It's human nature to record our thoughts so that we can revisit them in hindsight, but I'll even go so far to hypothesize that many individuals do so to also whore out their emotional outbursts so that they might evoke pity or empathy. Consequently, Sodini made reoccurring decisions to not reciprocate any of the feedback that I'm sure he was offered.

The clear moral of the story is that we need to think about depression, emotion, sexuality, and how all of these elements contribute to far more astronomical decisions such as murder... if it's of any importance I'm fairly certain my blog won't end in the taking of anyone's life.

Ok, now I'm turning off my serious face =)

Sweet ride Holmes...

It's good to see some camaraderie around here... I spotted this in a parking lot on BGSU's campus. Game on in half an hour!

Because my "Friend-O" didn't call...

I'm quickly sharing a brief post before my morning workout. I just came to the conclusion that I need new slippers, but I'm unsure what to do with the old warn-out pair. I feel guilty throwing them in the dumpster, so what to do with them? No one that I can think of will be able to (nor would they want to) reuse this scraggily pair. After breaking my leg, I've had an affinity for pedicures and slippers (I know, this probably furthers my status as an old lady) so I usually spring for the very best top quality. My faves were from http://www.zappos.com/ but this time I think I'm going to try to go green. The closer I feel to being barefoot the better.

Starting the search after I get back...

Sacri-licious

This is probably going to be one of many "what is the world coming to" posts, but I am not one to offer many disclaimers (shya right)... so moving on.

One of the places that I hate to see change has undergone a pretty moronic facelift. The Clare City bakery, once a haven for my hometown doughnut obsession and employer of my Grandma Lietzke, has been bought out by a bunch of local cops. This is ludicrous! I'll even go so far as to call this "sacri-licious!"

The memories are very vivid for me, but they're all being replaced by homogeneous, mass-produced merchandise and now there's even talk of this place becoming a rubric/prototype for future doughnut venues nationwide. Queer slogans plastered across the backs of t-shirts and other stupid objects (like teddie bears and coffee mugs) placed under the "Shameless Commerce Division" (sorry guys, even though you pointed it out, doesn't mean I'll pay for your advertising on my clothing) of their website read "You Have the Right to Remain Glazed" and "Fighting Crime One Donut at a Time." Seriously, whomever buys this junk is a loser.

Truly, yes, I'm an advocate of local business ownership and economical repositioning (especially in Clare) but give me a break. Is this going to be similar to the great Mountain Country Music Festival debaucle in Farwell circa 2007? (I'd add a link, but nothing seems to work... oh well, Phil Coultrip is probably in prison and I'm relatively positive they still haven't retrieved the password from that laptop that I royally jacked up when I was "no longer needed" to write their press releases mwahahahaha!) Or what about the reality TV crew that the Clare school board welcomed in to exploit the area and inspire the student body? (Oh, this will definitely be a future post, just you wait.)

I'm pretty bummed out about this whole thing. When I was a little girl, my sisters and I would stop in to the bakery with our mom (to visit Gram) and to pick out our own doughnuts. Old timers sat around sipping coffee and the patrons were invited to have a real, authentic hometown bakery experience without all of the frills. When standing next to the enormous glass counter, there were lots of choices to make: from cream bread to day old wares. I always opted for the swirled cinnamon bun with the sugary white glaze on the top and the tiny toasted flecks of coconut (which is unlike any I've had anywhere else.) Man, I'm telling you, if that is no longer there then I'll be really sad.

Sacri-licious indeed (See, I coined my own jack-ass slogan... anybody can do it... and I don't even wear a badge.)

The betes

Was just thinking about this after my last post. Quick, dirty, accurate definition:

Also, courtesy of Rachael and Drew, this comes to mind:

Whoa, I'm screwed.....

Anything more addictive than legal stimulants, Tim-bits, and diabetic coma-enducing ice cream concoctions now conveniently packaged in tandem with one another? Probably not. Thanks BG for selling out:

The worst part is that I drive by here on my way home from the Rec Cen every day! Boooo!

Protein is Delish!

My dinner earlier was accompanied by fresh green beans w/ mushrooms
(don't hate... liver and onions is SO nutritious):
which leads me to my plans for breakfast manana....
If I wore them, I might consider donning a pair similar to those above.

PEANUT!

Newest arrival to Myrtle Beach...

Can't wait to meet her and hold her :-)

Congrats and much love to Bad and Bobster

Why didn't I know about this!?!

Attell's stand-up special Captain Miserable premiered Sunday 7/5/09 at 10pm. Luckily I found all six parts (you can thank me later.) Almost as good as when we saw him in Detroit:

*sings* Money, its a gas. Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash...

Only a few weeks (days really) before the Fall semester starts... therefore, this morning I'm concentrating on making a few long term goals. My main concern, as usual, is the money aspect of all my plans. Yet, if I look back in hindsight I realize that everything else that I've set out to do has been actualized regardless of the mass fundage that I always need. Anyway, the following list of crap is what I need/want to happen within this next year:

1.watch Tigers in Tampa for my birthday (beginning of Sept)

2. Wheatland w/ JKSR

3. visit Chad & Bobbi... and new little Peanut!

4. Roadtrip w/ Funnell to Asheville

5. doctor and hospital bills paid off

6. knee surgery/rod removal

7. possible abdominoplasty

The last three are obviously the main concerns! Unfortunately I don't have a lot of "show money" laying around here to burn... will have to take on more teaching jobs this next summer. More plans to come, but must deal with the current task at hand first:

ridin' the torture bike for 40 mins every a.m.

until later.....

Initial Food Post

So the day is winding down, and I've decided to share the delish corn salad I threw together earlier. My mom drove down last Thurs/Fri for a visit and to check out the "exclusive" shops here in BG (i.e. crap stores that I never go to, but appeased her because she loves bargains.) She rewarded me by bringing a bag full of Michigan produce that she either bought at the local farmer's market or grew in her/Roger's garden. I tossed in some feta, black olives, and fat-free Italian dressing. Num! Along with the special roast beef and Havarti that she brought from the Amish discount store I was in business health wise.

Top of the Morning and Top of the Page!

Hello world. This is BA. Testing the waters of the blogosphere. I know... you're on the edge of your seats. Stay tuned for continued and sustained beesh.
